History/Pull Point: After Family Reunion, Part One.
History on the Buffy Wikia, the below is additional headcanon for her background.
1. Lavinia was born in 1902. She’s the youngest of three daughters, with Sophronia older by four years and Edna older by six. This puts her around 108 in the present day.
2. Fairweather is not the original family name; it was a nickname picked up by Lavinia and Sophronia due to their fickle natures. The real family name is Harris, and the family is very wealthy, owning an estate in London and a country home in Bath. Edna and her family (the Giles family line) become the inheritors of the estate as Edna is the oldest and most responsible of the three. Lavinia and Sophronia are both given sizable inheritances.
3. Lavinia also attended the Watcher’s Academy like her oldest sister, but dropped out in her teens and joined Sophronia. They begin making deals to preserve their youth and beauty in their 20s. The two sisters become practically inseparable.
--From this point, things are fairly estranged between Edna and her younger sisters. While the three still care about each other, they’re never close again.
4. While Edna (understandably) tries to shield her son, Edmund Giles, from the influences of Lavinia and Sophronia, both aunts do try to be caring aunts and frequently spoil their nephew with gifts. This care also extends to their grand-niece and grand-nephew after Alice Giles and Rupert Giles are born.
5. After inadvertently setting Rupert on his path to becoming a Watcher, the two keep the Shard of Stronnos as a reminder. The shard is later given to Angel and Faith to aid in their quest to bring Rupert Giles back to life.
6. Giles’ “Ripper” years remind Lavinia of her own wayward youth and she kept an eye on him from afar. One of her biggest regrets is not doing more for him.
--Ethan Rayne tried to pick her up in a bar. She might have gone with him if he wasn’t one of Giles’ friends.
7. They spend their time between America and Europe, though still most of their time in London. Between the wealth of the Fairweather family, and the numerous gifts from their lovers, the two never need to work and can enjoy their frivolous and hedonistic life. After Edna’s death and while Giles is living in Sunnydale, the two make use of the estate and country home.
8. Lavinia made a total of 72 deals over her life to ensure eternal beauty, health, and youth (and thus near-immortality).
9. They see Giles off at the airport before he leaves for Sunnydale, much to the chagrin of the Giles family and the other Watchers.
10. After Buffy leaves Sunnydale, the sisters ask Giles if he wants their help in finding her. He turns their offer down.
11. They learned about Buffy being brought back to life from one of their demonic benefactors. After Giles’ death, they discuss the idea of bringing him back to life.
12. When Giles returns to London after “Tabula Rasa”, they try to give him advice and guidance, but are rejected by him.
13. The sisters dropped in while Willow was staying with Giles, much to his mild annoyance, and were only allowed to stay around if they were on their best behavior. They last three days before Giles kicks them out.
14. After the Watcher’s Council headquarters was destroyed by Caleb, Lavinia and Sophronia took some of the magical texts for themselves. Giles gave them other books for safekeeping. The important and dangerous ones are locked up in bank vaults.
15. Both sisters attended the funerals of Edna, Edmund, Alice, and Giles.
Personality: From the comics, we know Lavinia is a fun-loving, hedonistic, and self-centered woman who used their magical talents to ensure eternal beauty, health, and youth. They have little regard to how Angel and Faith feel about them staying at the estate, essentially inviting themselves in (though they have the right as Giles stated in his will all living residents could remain; they’re just being a little bratty about it). While they give Angel and Faith the Shard of Stronnos to aid in their quest and offer their own respective opinions (Lavinia is for Giles being brought back to life, Sophronia against), they do little else to help out.
However, there are a few things that can be inferred from Lavinia’s actions and the events she would have lived through. Family is important to Lavinia. Despite the risks of bringing him back to life, Lavinia wants Giles returned to the world because he was too good to die the way he did. (“Oh, Rupert. I can feel you scowling at me. Come now, love. We held our noses and let you get old, but I’ll be buggered if we’ll permit our nephew to die like some commoner who slips in the bath. Not without a fight. If there’s a way to bring you back, Angel will find it. We’ll see to that.”) In a smaller, comical scene, we found out she blocked Sophronia’s efforts to shag Morrissey. Why we don’t know what she did, but we do know Morrissey insulted Sophronia (“Out of my way, you vapid slag”) and Lavinia likely took offense to her sister being treated as thus. Her methods may not be the best ways, she may be selfish, but family is important to Lavinia.
Lavinia and Sophronia are a tight-knit pair. While there might have been times where each woman did their own thing, I think the majority of their life was spent together, having fun, enjoying life.
Lavinia also grew up through World War I and World War II. Rations, seeing the boys in her town go off to war and not come back, the constant threat of attack, it’s a lot to live through as a teenager. With the status of her family, and because of her training in the Academy, she would have been expected to help with war relief and give all she could to help. She would have been 37 by the time World War II began. Living through two wars is a scary thing, and I think the decision to use magic to remain beautiful and young is both for selfish reasons, but also in response to the wars. The world is falling apart, let them stay young and enjoy things while they can. I personally think Lavinia, seeing the world fall apart because of war, and all the stress from the Watcher academy, rebelled by falling into magic and a hedonistic life. She wanted to live and enjoy life without punishment, not wither away under a broken world.
Despite her apparent youth, Lavinia is in her 90s if not early 100s. She’s seen it all and really isn’t someone to be flustered or distressed by much (except when a warty demon tries to make out with her). Or in other worlds, Lavinia is so old and has seen so much, she doesn’t give a damn about what people think.
Abilities/Special Powers/Non average skills: Due to deals with demons and all sorts of magic, despite being in her 90s, Lavinia looks no older than a woman in her 20s. She can also smoke, drink and, assumedly, have sex without any negative consequences to her health and body.
She does have magical talent, though none in fighting or defensive spells. It’s stated Giles went to her and her sister for help with some spells, so there are things she can do with time and assistance, but she’s not a fighter at all.
While not as much as Edna or even Giles, she would have knowledge of magical artifacts, spells, and demons.
As their family owned horses, Lavinia is a very good horseback rider.

Even worse was the ridiculous idea she was brought as a champion to rid the world of thorns. Did they think she was a gardener?
Lavinia huffed as she looked in the mirror, carefully checking her face for any wrinkles. There seemed to be magic in the world so not a wrinkle or a blemish could be seen, but there was no telling how things worked in other worlds and dimensions. “Goodness, Sophie, this is a bloody mess,” she muttered to herself. Was this some sort of punishment for a decadent life of magic and hedonism? She didn’t remember making any deals that involved being sent to other dimensions. Or was there a shred of truth behind the rambling old man’s story?
All things in time she supposed. Presently, there was a far more distressing matter at hand. Lavinia straightened up and stared in disgust at the hideously floofy dress they had given her. No, no, this would not do. Floof was out, if it was ever in in the first place. There would be changes, beginning with her wardrobe.
